Bears in Springstead! You bet. Black bears are commonly found in the northern third of Wisconsin.

 

Males weigh about 250-300 lbs and females 120-280 lbs. Bears are typically shy and secretive animals, and most go to great lengths to avoid humans. Bears typically wander over long distances. Home ranges are about 27 square miles.

 

As a kid we would go to the Springstead Dump after dinner just to watch the Bears at the dump. Nowadays the dumps are closed and everything gets recycled in Springstead.
